i use the status bar to show only time and date, i like it clean, and with very tiny font, so it don't use much space (10 inch netbook display) so i use dzen2 to show other statusbar that i activate with a keybinding and it shows for 30 seconds and then disappears, showing a lot of info, like uptime, disk space, battery status, volume, etc
