I had a TS830S for 18 years or so before I sold it last year after I 
bought my FT1000MP. It was an excellent rig that still compares 
favorably with the crop of current radios.

I used it for a very long time without a second VFO, there is a mod 
that changes the RIT/XIT control so that it covers approximately +/- 
10 KHz. With that mod, you can handle most of the split operations, 
on CW anyway.
