I run the SteppIR antennaYahooGroup and find it works real well if you give it the attention it deserves. Don't make it a "public" group. And don't allow e-mail attachments. The moderator should approve new member requests (only takes a second or two) so you can keep the spam and porn merchants out, but once you get it going it's pretty easy to maintain. I have over 600 members.
There's a lot of good features (photos, files, etc can be uploaded and viewed by all members) and members can select individual e-mails, or a daily digest (one e-mail with the entire day's postings), or no e-mail at all (just visit the site to see the postings)... so it's pretty flexible. Members have to get a Yahoo identity before they can join, but that's pretty easy too. I think a Yahoo Group might be a good way to go.
