There are several ways to make an interface cable for these rigs, ranging 
from the cheap to the expensive.  The Kenwood IF-232C is probably the most 
expensive interface.  In between is the one I use - I built it from a 1488 
and 1489 chip.  If I make another or upgrade the one I have, I'll use a 
MAX232 for a lower chip count.  Basically, the Kenwood rig uses TTL 
levels on its serial port and the computer uses RS-232 levels.

Some people have built circuits with a few zener diodes to do the same 
thing. Probably the cheapest but maybe not quite so reliable.
