Hello Victor. In my case I used an "External remote automatic antenna tuner" (like the FC-40 or AH-4) but instead of connect it to a wire, either in horizontal or vertical mount, I adapted it to an old 10m vertical antenna I had here, with about 5.5m of length, bypassing (you can remove also) the matching section. Simply connect the RF output of the tuner to the aluminium element and that's it. Grounding should be provided also, as recommended.
The tuner can match the vertical element in all bands from 80 to 10m, but as the length is not sufficient for the lower bands, the efficiency is reduced. To overpass this limitation on the lower bands, it is recommended (as I read somewhere) to use capacitive hats on the top of the vertical element. Also, documentation of this kind of tuners says that lengths of wire near 1/2 wavelength of the frequency you plan to use should be avoided, due to the high voltage present on the RF output terminal of the tuner. Playing a little bit with a spreadsheet, you can get a good length that is fine for all bands. And, with this solution, you may have to stick to a limited range of models from a certain brand, or you can buy a non-"big three brands" tuner, which works with every transceiver.
