I didn't understand it either until I looked up my own call (I have not worked
VP6DX).

The on-line log shows you the band/modes that are NEEDED.  Red boxes are
needed, blue boxes mean that band/mode isn't schedule to be activated (like 160
RTTY).  If you have worked them on fewer than all modes on a given band (i.e.
just 20 SSB), there will be a check mark in the box meaning you worked them on
THAT band/mode, other red boxes for the same band mean you have NOT worked them
on that band/mode.

So for the band/mode leaders, the display will be very sparse, since they will
NEED VP6DX on only a few band/modes.
