Hi DXers,
My local friends are helping KH8 stations to organize their own association to join IARU. Please take a look at their press release.

Press Release for Immediate Use

Amateur radio continues to grow with a new amateur radio association ready to join the IARU-International Amateur Radio Union.

On November 4, 2003, a formal meeting of the new "American Samoa Amateur Radio Association" was held. Larry Gandy AH8LG was elected president of ASARA. Uti Gandy KS6FO was elected Sec/Treas, and Lee Wical KH6BZF was made the Liaison officer.  All the members present at the founding meeting voted to apply for membership in Region III of the IARU.  The growth of amateur radio in the central Pacific and growth in the size of IARU will support the future of amateur radio world-wide.

Amateur radio operators world-wide should welcome the entry of ASARA into Region III of the IARU.

American Samoa Amateur Radio Assoc (ASARA)

2nd Press Release.

Some have asked why more IARU Member associations are needed.  The answer is clear, both to provide better representation for problems unique to the Assoc AND to strengthen Amateur Radio in defending against the growing number of other potential users of the Amateur Frequencies.  More Members mean more votes.

The history of IARU has many examples of local Amateur Radio Assoc being supported in their bid for IARU membership by the former "parent" Assoc.  For example the REF-Union support for New Caledonia, and RSGB support for Pitcairn, and PEF support for Macao to be IARU Members.  We expect the ARRL to support the desire of the ASARA for membership in IARU to better represent the interests of American Samoa and strengthen the IARU.  The spirit of cooperation with ARRL in defending the Amateur interests will of course continue.
