I.C.P.O. Calendar (September 02 - 11, 2004)
Islands, Castles & Portable Operations
Operations are listed by start date (Day/Month/Year)
=====================================================
02/09/2004: Andre, GM3VLB, has decided to activate the EU-008 area
starting September 2, 2004, and he will take any advantage of possible
breaks in the bad weather. He will be based on Skye (SCOTIA CN-14, IOSA
NH-07) in his tent or mini-mobile-home!! From there, he will target 8
islands: S. Rona (SCOTIA DI-27, IOSA NH-09), Scalpay (SCOTIA CN-18, IOSA
NH-30), Longay (SCOTIA CN-19, IOSA NH-13), Staffin (SCOTIA DI-28, IOSA
NH-42), Flodigarry (SCOTIA DI-29, IOSA NH-41), Wiay (SCOTIA CN-21, IOSA
NH-14), Soay (SCOTIA CN-16, IOSA NH-26) and Crowlin (SCOTIA CN-20, IOSA
NH-12)...but probably not in that order...the eventual order will depend
on the WX...all are exposed and very WX-dependent (not only the wind
speed but often, crucially, its direction) and only accessible by small
boats. Andre will have to rely on 'on-the-air' information and on
e-mails his XYL may be able to send out. He is prepared to 'hang about'
for up to 2 weeks, after which un-activated islands will be 'put aside'
until next year! However...Andrea does intend to activate the Isle of
May (IOTA EU-123, SCOTIA CS-01, IOSA FF-01) which was recently cancelled
due to bad weather, as soon as he can after his return from EU-008. QSL

SPECIAL EVENTS -

01/09/2004: The Orkney Wireless Museum will be on the air as GB2OWM
during the 14th Orkney International Science Festival between 1 and 11
September. Probable operating times will be weekdays and Sundays between
2.30 and 4.30pm and on Saturdays from 10.00am to 12.30pm. The 2004
Festival will run from Wednesday 1st to Saturday 11th September. It will
open in spectacular style with a concert by the visiting dancers and
drummers from Sturgeon Lake, Saskatchewan, on the evening of Thursday
2nd. The relationship between traditional worldviews and modern science
is one of the themes of this year's Festival, particularly appropriate
in an island group with a rich heritage of ancient sites such as the
Ring of Brodgar which have been shown to contain sophisticated
astronomical alignments. Orkney's rich archaeological heritage,
internationally-renowned, features each year in the Festival programme,
with new insights and reports of excavations. The glories of the
Neolithic, with the Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe and Skara Brae, have
long been regarded as the start of it all, but research in recent years
is throwing up tantalising hints of an older Mesolithic hunter-gatherer
culture. QSL via QRZ.com. [Tnx MM0DFV]
