A baby born in the U.S. (i.e. Alabama) is
automatically a U.S. citizen but a baby born in the Canal Zone was
not.

Very interesting! When I was in basic training back in 1953 at Fort Dix
(New Jersey to the uninformed) one of the trainees was from Panama. I believe he
was drafted which would make me wonder if he were not a citizen, then why was he
drafted.
It was at Fort Dix that drove me to become a ham!
