The U.S. Postal Service's plan to raise postage rates in January could
encourage more people to abandon "snail mail" for the Internet, the head
of a postal watchdog group said Friday.
Effective Jan. 8, most postal rates and fees will increase an average of
5.4 percent, the postal service announced Monday. The price of
first-class stamps will increase from 37 cents to 39 cents. Postage for
postcards will increase a penny to 24 cents. It is the first postal rate
increase since 2002.
The service said the increase is needed to comply with a congressional
mandate to establish an escrow account. The increase will generate $3.1
billion for that account.
The volume of mail handled by the postal service has declined in recent
years.
