I say to anyone out there on the west coast that needs a good antenna on 40m
to snap it up.

I used a blown-up R-7 and added some aluminum to make a full-size 1/4 wave
vertical with 2 wire counterpoise radials. I put it up on a 20ft
telescoping pole. It is a bomb! Fed with coax work the whole band no
problem without a tuner. Or you can shorten it some by using the coil from
the last trap (17m) and cap hat. After Hurricane Floyd, I used it fed with
450 ohm ladderline and balanced tuner and worked the world on every band
(but 160m). Sure, it's not a beam but it can be easily set-up at a campsite
on the beach somewhere or for after the storm when you need to get on the
air.

If it was within driving distance, I'd go for it.
