always, you never know - "Work First Worry Later" (WFWL).

4W, EAST TIMOR. Thor, 4W6MM, was heard this past Friday switching sometimes
between 14195 and 14002 kHz between 1500-1700z.

8P, BARBADOS. Dean, 8P6SH, will be active as 8P2K in the CQ/RJ Worldwide
DX Contest (RTTY - September 28-29th) possibly as a Single Op/All Band
or Single Op/Single Band (15 meters) entry. QSL via KU9C.

A5, BHUTAN. John, KP2A, and his XYL will be on holiday from here September
11-18th. Reportedly, they have tickets, visas and a license in hand to
operate from Bhutan. John is expected to operate from the "Ham Center"
as A52DX. Activity will be on 160-6 meters CW/SSB. An on-line log search
is expected to be active during and after the operation at: http://kp2a.vi/
QSL A52DX via W3HNK.

AMATEUR RADIO CALLBOOK TO STOP PUBLICATION. According to the ARRL Web News,
"Radio Amateur Callbook is throwing in the towel and will cease publication
of its CD-ROM Callbook product effective with its winter 2003 edition, which
will come out in November." Publisher Bob Hughes states that this is due
to accessibility to the FCC database via the Internet, and sales have
declined to levels that make it unprofitable to publish future editions.

C9, MOZAMBIQUE. Babs/DL7AFS and Lot/DJ7ZG will once again be active from
here (they were recently active as C98DC Oct. 2001 from Inhaca Island).
Lot reports that after some days of preparations, they will start their
2 week activity around September 22nd. They do expect to operate from an
island at Northern Mozambique. In Maputo, they will meet with Rei, C98RF
(DL6DQW) and will probably travel together. Rei will do the CW and 6 meter
activity and use his C98RF callsign. Babs and Lot will try to operate
RTTY/PSK mostly on 18101 kHz. Look for them on the usual DX frequencies.
QSL C98RF (CW,6m) to DL6DQW. QSL C98DC (SSB/RTTY/PSK) to DL7AFS. More
information will be announced later. Check the Web page for updates at:
                      http://www.qsl.net/dl7afs

DX SSB Contest (October 26-27th) as a Single Op/All Band entry. Callsign
is currently unknown. QSL via IK3HHX.

DX OPERATOR(S) NEEDED (Interesting Operation Of The Week). OPDX has been
informed that Susan Meckley, Skipper, W7KFI/mm, will be leaving in about
two weeks on a 2+ year DXpedition into the South Pacific and Asia. She
will be using a 46 ft. sailboat, much as Danny W. did on YASMI in the
early and middle 50's. Susan will be single-handing the boat and has put
out a notice that hams are welcome to ride along with her on the next
leg of the trip. She states, "I supply the boat, and we split food and
license costs. Now, can you get cheaper than that?" If interested, contact
her via the following addresses that was provided:
Susan Meckley, Skipper, S/V Menage-A-Trois, Carson City, NV 928707

taking along a collapsible pole to use on 80/160 meters and an inverted
"L" antenna. He would like to make some 160m contacts from there, however,
he knows the summer QRN will be a hinderance. He will be using only
100 watts for this operation. QSL via home callsign. Remember, Paul and
his wife Peg/KB9LIE will enter in the North American QSO Party SSB Contest
(August 17-18th) using the Green River Valley ARS club callsign FP/K9WM.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER. Lee, KH6BZF, propagation guru, reports:
"From midnight to dawn, Monday and Tuesday (August 12-13th) about 60-70
meteors per hour will enter Earth's atmosphere. Viewing should be
Good-to-Excellent due to the Moon transiting from a New Moon on the 8th
August to the first quarter on the 15th August, of course weather
permitting. This shower is created by the Earth passing through the debris
field left from the Swift-Tuttle comet. These grain-like particles enter
Earth's atmosphere, then burn up and create what most people call shooting
stars! The Perseid Meteor shower is NOT expected to be as spectacular as
the Leonid Meteor shower that occurs each November. But, if viewing is
good, people will not be disappointed. For more info on meteor propagation,
VHFers consult your ARRL handbook." More information can be sought at URLs:

Hans-Juergen, DL1YFF, informs OPDX that there was a change in the
German postage. As you might know, in the European Community (most
West European countries) the currencies have changed to the EURO. This
has also changed the national stamps, which has also changed to
the EURO. Particularly in Gemany, the national post office withdraws
the old stamps with DM (Deutschmark) on them from the market and has
replaced them all with the new EURO. Furthermore, they (German Postal
System) have declared the old ones not to be used anymore on letters
as of July 1st, which means they are void on letters. As you know,
many hams use SASE letters for their direct QSL service, particularly
for DXpeditions and many still use the old stamps because they do not
know about the changes. Their old stamps are not absolutely void
because they can be changed into new ones at the postal offices in
Germany, however, this will come to an end in September.

A log search, as well as QSL information and update to date activity
on the current Benin (TY) operation, can be found on the Web page:
              http://perso.wanadoo.fr/f5cwu/html/benin02.htm

VP2V/N2WKS and will probably be QRT by the time you read this. He was
expected to be active from Virgin Gaurda, August 9-12th, with an entry
in the WAE CW Contest. QSL via N2WKS. Look for pictures and the logs
on his Web page at: http://www.qsl.net/n2wks

THE GACW KEY DAY. The GACW KD is not a competition or contest but an
event to encourage all amateur radio operators to bring out his/her old
manual key (no electronic keys) and make as many QSOs as they can with
other participants. The event takes place each year the last Saturday in
February. Next event will be February 23rd, 2003, from 1800z Saturday
until 0600z Sunday. Suggested frequencies are (on or up): 3530, 7030,
14030, 21030 and 28030 kHz. QSOs on the WARC bands are allowed but no
recommended frequencies. Again, the mode is: A1A - CW, straight key only
and no electronic key. Stations should call: CQ KD - CQ GACW KD, etc.
Exchange: Greetings and RST plus your GACW #. Non GACW members send KD.
If you make more than 10 QSOs you are invited to vote for 3 different
stations that you felt had very good sending skills. The "GACW KEY DAY"
will be awarded to the 5 most voted stations. For logging, there will
be a simple list using log book format, etc. Deadline is no later than
the 15st of March to GACW. Logs can be sent via E-mail as text-file to:
                          [EMAIL PROTECTED]
GACW address is: P.O. Box 9, B1875ZAA - Wilde, Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA

VK0, MACQUARIE ISLAND. Paul, A35RK, has informed OPDX that stateside
stations might want to look for VK0MQI during the Anza Net (14183 kHz
+/-). Paul states, "He has checked into the Anza Net on the last 2 Sundays
(Zulu time....that's late Saturday night in North America) at shortly
after 0500z. I don't know if this will be a 'regular' appearance, but
it might be worth a listen if someone needs VK0/M."

XY, MYANMAR. The current group active there has been very easy to work.
If you have not worked them yet, do not worry. They will be there until
August 22nd. By the time you read this, they should have four stations
active from Ngapali. The team seems to be using several different callsigns,
so pay attention to what the operator says.
