What have you seen that documents a /proc/sound directory? None exists on wide variety of systems I have at my disposal, including 2.6.32-54-generic 3.2.0-58-generic and 3.11.0-15-generic versions of the Linux kernel.
If your audio doesn't work there is some other reason for the problem; there is no reason to suspect a /proc/sound is necessary.
