I switched to the Proprietary AMD/ATI driver and the X server locked up after I unlocked the screen... at the point where it would have powered off & back on with the Open Source driver. I have not been able to replicate this on a freshly installed machine so I believe it must be a side effect of upgrading from 13.10. I don't know if upgrading now will still generate this issue, but this machine was upgraded to 14.04 some time ago.
