Desktop enviroment is unity 7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1 This bug occurs independent on the icon theme as far as I was able to test it. Happens with Ambianca Adwaita or ubuntu-mono-dark. I don't think this is an icon theme thing since the icon is definitively available

When the sound is not muted upon startup the indicator is there as expected. By changing the volume the indicator appears, and stays even if I mute the sound once more... What I expected to see: the icon for the muted indicator-sound at startup, whenever I start with muted sound.
