By the way, the reason that maybe upstream is using the icon successfully without user confusion might be (speculating here) that they usually do not use it as part of a fixed point on the screen. It would be much less confusing for example if this was only visible when you alt-tab etc. Unless you have the left unity side-bar set to auto- hide this pointer is very visible there and in the place where unity WANTS most of the mouse pointer action to happen. So, again, IMNSHO it will easily confuse users who search for the pointer first in that area.
