shaligm With reference to this gedit bug, I found the foll. link useful https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=120283
The link advises editing the line in gedit.desktop to Exec=gedit "$1" < /dev/null I used Jedit to edit gedit.desktop. Any other text editor (other than gedit in this instance, obviously) would work as well. When I did as advised, double clicking to open any text file, resulted in four open tabs titled: $1, < , null and the file in question. Files $1, > and null are non-existent! But left click on trash bin functioned normally!! It was a partial success. But this gave me the idea of editing the file /usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop with some changes. On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system 1) Open a terminal 2) cd /usr/share/applications 3) sudo jedit gedit.desktop (give password) 4) scroll to line 6 5) It reads Exec=gedit %U Edit the line to delete %U Save Exit jedit Close terminal After this edit, left click on trash icon opened trash folder. Also double clicking on any text file icon, opens only that file in Gedit (no multiple tabs). Problem solved entirely! shaligm -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. Trash gets emptied by right click on trash bin icon. Also nautilus opens trash folder neatly. When I uninstalled gedit thru synaptic the problem goes away. But this cannot be a fix! gedit version 3.4.1 Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 3.2.0-67-generic-pae I tried to see if booting with an older kernel 3.2.0-65 generic pae would solve the problem.
