I have the same problem. If the launcher is set to auto-hide, it's impossible to open it with a touchscreen (on Unity 7, Ubuntu 14.10).
I would expect that sliding the finger from the outside of the left edge of screen to the inside causes the launcher to open. For consistency, the exact behaviour should probably be similar to the launcher on a Ubuntu phone. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. I've adjusted the sensitivity all the way down to the Highest, but it still does not appear. Instead, it appears to hold focus on whatever application is currently on top. In the situation where no apps are open/near the hotspot, it is assumed I am either simply tapping the desktop, or attempting to drag-highlight a group selection instead. It should be noted that the cursor appears on the far edge, as I would expect typical mouse behavior to emulate bringing the Launcher into view.
