This seems to have taken on a new significance with Xenial, and the migration to Gnome Software Center. I'm getting an "important OS and application updates are ready to be installed" message from Gnome Software Center, but the "View" and "Not Now" buttons are missing.

The possibility to add buttons for the developer of software would be really helpful. E.g. Roger (http://en.tabos.org/home) a tool for the VOIP/SIP-Router Fritzbox shows incoming calls and the notification gives you the options to Accept, Decline, Cancel or Ok the call. But as the unity notification daemon does not support buttons roger falls back to the not elegant GTK-window. It would be great and helpful if the notification daemon would have the options for buttons. According to this bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ux/+bug/1384730) Unity8 will have it, hopefully also the desktop versions.
