this has to do with the icon theme you are using.
try switching to human, it fixed it for me

When changing the volume or brightness, a blank notification pops up instead on
a notification that has the volume or brightness level. See attachment for
screenshot. The notification system works when changing songs in rhythmbox.
I'm on a HP dv9000 series laptop running the 64-bit version of jaunty
