Public bug reported:

I'm finding the indicator applet quite frustrating with Pidgin (and
Jaunty). The tiny green dot added to the envelope is not very
prominent and I continually find myself missing the fact that an
unread IM is waiting for my attention/response. It would be nice if
the applet did the orange background flash that many applications do
in this case. I know Pidgin has plugins to do fancy things with
notification, but it feels wrong to have to use one of them when the
indicator applet is supposed to handle this job.

I've also noticed some cases where, if a Pidgin conversation window
is open, but unfocused and behind other windows, that the applet
doesn't change at all. I have to go check the window to see if an
unread message is present. This (lack of) behaviour doesn't seem to
be 100% consistent, and I haven't had enough experience with it to
figure out if there's a pattern.

Instant messages are in a different class of notification priority
in comparison to email. I wouldn't really want it to flash at me
when I have unread email, for example. So yeah, it's a tricky
problem.

Time-sensitive notifications, such as when an unread IM is waiting, aren't
prominent enough
