John, I operate about 30% CW, and do not use the <alt> key for changing speeds, I use the "+" and "-" keys. If you have a large keyboard with numeric keypad, you can just hit "+" and "-" on the keypad to change speed; if you have a laptop, you press the "-" (dash) and then <shift>"+".
