Bob Select the radio as Kenwood, and the baud rate should be fixed at 4800.
Ensure that DTR and RTS are high, as they likely provide the power to your level converter. I highly suspect that this is your problem. Make sure that it is the correct com port that the radio is connected to (ie Com 1).
