Does the HP LaserJet run OK with all the other programs that you use? If the driver is really old (older than the operating system you're using) there's a fair chance that you're hitting an incompatibility in the driver.
Microsoft changes the driver API every OS _at_least_ and have changed the architecture of device drivers three times since Win95 rendering previous drivers something between unreliable and inoperable. I'm not (really) complaining about MS, just the way things are when you try to advance the OS. What's the model of the LaserJet, version of the driver, and version of the OS?
