Hi Bill, I bought a new "whiz bang" computer from Dell a couple of months ago. It is a 9100. Of course, it had no serial ports. Rather than use USB to serial port adapters I made sure it had some PCI slots. It has 3 PCI slots along with some Enhanced PCI slots. Luckily none of the PCI slots were in use so I was able to install 2 two port PCI serial cards I had from my old computer. These are very reasonably priced from byterunner.com and easy to install and configure. So now I have four serial ports as well as 7 USB ports.
I was really surprized at how quickly the USB ports filled up. The computer came with a USB keyboard and mouse and I had two USB printers and a USB scanner. Most all rigs require this to be set 'high'. If not the DTR, then it would be the RTS. I know that you must have one of them set high.
