This is a common problem that I am finding with the new USB Digital Hardware devices such as "Rig Expert SD" and "Rig Blaster's new Plug and Play". I have been testing both units; the Rig Expert for the past month (purchased at Dayton) and the Plug and Play since it arrived on Thursday. New Laptop computers do not have Com ports, just USB ports. These new Hardware devices allow you to have one USB cable to control both Rig Control (CIV or Cat) and PTT. They use a USB to Serial converter software, but share the same Com port for both Rig Control and PTT. The problem is that common Ham software such as Dx4win, Writelog, MTTY, etc. require separate Rig Control and PTT Com ports. So you get conflicts. With Dx4win, I can get the both units to recognize the Rig Control, but when I set up PTT for PSK or RTTY, they give me conflicts including the "Blue Screen of Death".
Either the Hardware companies need to change how these devices convert USB to Com Ports, or radios that have USB ports, or the software companies such as Dx4win, etc. need to re-write the software for these new devices. It's a Chicken and Egg thing between the Hardware and Software people. My system is Windows XP, plenty of memory and Icom 756pro. I will keep trying and talking to the Hardware and Software vendors. If I come up with a solution, I will post it. So far my only way to get these to work is separate cables for Rig Control and PTT. If anyone has a solution... I am very open to testing and figuring this out. So far I have searched the web, tried multiple User groups all with the same response asking for help too.
