Paul, I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm running as an administrator. After seeing your email I installed DX4WIN and when asked if I wanted to run it I said yes and it worked. I then exited DX4WIN and tried to rerun it and it wouldn't run. I received the usual message about copying the file vichw11.sys and the program exited. I then reinstalled DX4WIN and when asked if I wanted to run the program I said yes and it ran again. I exited DX4WIN and tried to run it again and it would not run.
We're getting close but no cigar. (for the time being I have no plans to install Vista on any of my machines) When running as administrator, DX4WIN runs fine. I do not get any error messages etc and the port driver is loaded. As a regular user, the port driver cannot be loaded. Versions prior to 7.03 would exit when this happens; I modified the code for version 7.03 to ignore this error, with the result that access to the LPT port(s) is disabled. I guess that the experiment worked, because my laptop is 32 bits. If you run the 64 bits version of Vista, loading the device driver will not work; even for the administrator. Will keep you posted, --Paul
