After 3 days of pulling my hair out I have solved the problem.
  
The problem was in the MMTTY keying setup window  (ALT S in the MMTTY window).  
With MMTTY using COM 1 for FSK the MMTTY keying setup cannot be set to COM 1 
also.  When running in the FSK mode the keying setup is irrelevant and should 
not matter, but it does. 
How the keying got set to COM 1 for v704 & 705 only I do not know.

I know it seems terribly obvious but have you rebooted lately? You might 
even have to go as far as physically dropping power to your PC.
