Carter No-one else has commented yet; but that is not the approach I would have taken.
Version 5.03 is a long way from where we currently are; I personally would recommend that you upgrade to the latest version ! If you are intent on getting your logs going on 5.03 first, on your new PC; AND you have the installation discs, I really think you should do a clean install. Jim, AD1C's web page www.ad1c.com gives good advice about upgrading; and I am sure about copying settings from 1 PC to another (exporting your preference files; and importing them on the 2nd PC). Generally, you can copy over your log files in the save directory; and replace the DX4WIN CTY file in that directory too, FOR THE SAME VERSION OF THE PROGRAMME. If you change versions; do an export from the older level; and use the correct import filter in the newer version! The CW issue you mentioned - you might need to look at your CW setup on your new PC anyway; I bet you had LPT or COM port keying on you WIN98 PC, that you won't have on your XP PC !! 73 Dave G3NKC -----Original Message----- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net]on Behalf Of Carter Sent: 06 February 2010 16:36 To: Dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Moving to another computer I have a few questions I hope someone in the group can answer... First, I am what is referred to in the DX4win literature as a "casual DXer". <grin> I have DX4win version 5.03, installed on my ham computer -- which uses Win98SE. Wanting to at least put a toe into the 21st century, I got a new computer with XP Pro. I DO have the 5.03 manual and my registration number and the CD. To take the easy way out, I just copied the DX4win folder and all of its sub directories from the old computer onto a CD and then loaded it on to the new computer rather than using a new install with the CD on the new computer. 1) In general, will this work? 2) It seemed to work (but the new computer is still on the bench, not hooked up to my Omni 6 or anything else). When I launch DX4win on the new computer, it comes up with a warning that says "Could not open CW driver". What does this refer to? Is it fatal or am I just missing some driver that did not carry over from the old machine (or is it something new required by now being on an XP machine)? Once I click on "OK" to clear the warning message, everything else seems to be there and be OK (or as OK as I can tell, realizing that no radios or anything else is yet hooked up to the computer). 3) If I decide to upgrade to the latest version, how would I do that? Can I just upgrade what I brought over from the old computer or would I be better off trying a fresh install using the 5.03 CD on the new computer, do the upgrade and then just worry about bringing over my log(s) later? (only problem I see with that is that I would lose all the upgraded CTY files, etc, that were installed on the old computer, it may not recognize Ducie and others in the existing log). Hope the questions make sense and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
