Tnx all - I copied the IEP file from another computer into the SAVE directory 
on the problem computer to no avail. When attempting the next step - 
uninstalling - I couldn't find DX4WIN in the list of programs available to be 
uninstalled...

So then I replaced the entire SAVE folder from good to bad computer - still the 
problem exists.

I'll keep tinkering with it - thanks for the suggestions and 73,

  If you have made changes the import/export filter, it may not get uninstalled.

  Look for a DX4WIN.IEP file in your SAVE directory after you
  un-install.  Remove it.  Then install again.
