Bob and fellow DX4WINers!
Like yourself, I am looking elsewhere and running parallel logging/
awards programs....DX Labs, HRD and Logger32. Each has it own benefits
and drawbacks, some with a steep learning curve but almost all have
active user support.
Of the above, I have found Logger32 to stand above the rest in terms of
flexibility and stability. There are many neat features:
1. Easy LOTW up/download. No more singing onto LOTW and entering
passwords/ usernames,
2. Integrated MMTTY and 2Tone, MMVARI, PSK31
3. Graphic rig control and spectrum scope,
4. Graphic rotor control for multiple rotor/ antenna combinations,
5. QRZ/ Hamcall look-up,
6. CW keyer with macros, etc.
7. Cluster connect automatic at boot up
8. Digital Voice Keyer....
9. Grid Square calculator.
10. NCDXF Beacons
11. HAMCAP integration
In short, many of the features DX4WIN users have been asking for many
times over....are already in Logger32 (and DXLab and HRD)
Feature requests are actually listened to and worked on and incorporated.
Its shortfalls, yes there are a few, are the "apps" which need to be
added on for simple things like QSL/ label printing, LOTW
synchronization, viewing reports. These apps are written by third
parties and, for the most part, work as advertised.
DX4WIN is a winner in the report generator aspect; the report generator
is far superior to anything I have seen to date...hands down winner.
Many of Logger32 reports are EXCEL spreadsheets and need to be massaged
to obtain a meaningful report.
Having been one of the early adopters of DX4WIN (I still think I have my
original floppy disc!), I have grown tired of the Windows 3.1 look of
DX4WIN and its lack of incorporating requested features. DX4WIN is in
dire need of updating, but it is one of the better logging/ award
tracking/ report generating programs. Additionally, Jim's AD1C support
has been outstanding and keeps this old boat afloat!
That's my feedback thus far...My desire is to remain with DX4WIN but the
more I learn about the capabilities of these other programs (and the
proactive author support provided),the further I lean to leaving.

I'm also a long time user of DX4WIN. If I recall correctly the "4WIN"
part of the name roughly equates to "for Windows". This was done to
differentiate itself from all the other logging programs that ran on
character based/old fashioned DOS. At the time "for Windows" was a
big deal. Not any more. Everything is for Windows, or perhaps for one
of the flavors of Linux.
I am in day 4 of my personal evaluation of HRD 6.x (paid version). As
a general logging program, I like HRD 6.x better than DX4Win 8.x.
When HRD was at 5.x, DX4WIN was better. This is no longer true in my
opinion. I'm slowly migrating to HRD.

Subject: [Dx4win] Change?
I have been using DX4Win since the early 1990s first versions and have
updated many times. The latest Updater to update all parameters is a
joy to
use and thanks to whoever wrote the software. Over the years I have
suggested a few changes some of which have been implemented. It is my
belief that any paid for program should reflect the
current usage requirements.
Clearly, the demands of internet, data integration with our station
hardware and the current revolution in QSLing should have meant that
DX4Win
would have been updated a few times over the past few years. DX4Win seems
to have stagnated with Version 8.05. In my mind it is falling behind in
features for the user. DX4Win is a great program and works very well
for me
but the bottom line is that needs to be updated. I don't know why it
isn't
being worked on.
I made the decision last month to research other logging programs with a
download and trial. Most of the them are either too limited in
features or
too overblown and hard to learn. All of them will not print directly
onto a
QSL card which is a major requirement for me as I QSL several
callsigns. I
don't do labels!
The one that seems to come close to DX4Win is Prolog. I quite like it's
operation and have ordered a copy to try. It seems to have all the
features
I need and is constantly being updated.
I will post again in a few weeks to let you know my experience with it.
