The best start menu replacement for Windows 8/8.1 is Classic Shell
www.classicshell.net and is free. Properly configured the look/feel
is very close to either XP, Vista or Windows 7.

I have the same issue with Win 8. What program are you using to make it more
like XP or 7?

Are there any other ways to make Win 8 more useable?

My only problem was adjusting to Windows 8. I couldn't adjust to the loss of the 'start
menu'. So I finally found a good add on program that gave me the "start menu"
function and look back. Not exactly line windows XP or 7, but close enough.
