Radio Swan/Radio Americas on aina ollut mielenkiintoinen aihe.
Mittaustuloksiin puuttumatta, asema tuli myös audion kera
Suomeen melko mukavasti sekä mw:llä että sw:lla noina vuosina.
Dokumentointi näyttäisi todeksi, että lähetyspaikka olisi ollut
Swan Island, jollei sitten "täydellinen cover-story" ole toteutunut.
Kirjoitin 1999 HCDX listalla aseman mw-lähettimestä seuraavaa:

THE EAGLE THAT BECAME A SWAN
In the September 1997 issue of the Electronics Now
magazine there was an interesting article about the
early days of RL/RFE. The article was written by
Stanley Leinwoll, who worked for the VOA from 1952-
1957, then joined RFE. In 1975 he became Director of
Engineering for RL/RFE. So, what he writes is "inside"
information.
In the chapter "The Eagle That Became A Swan" he tells
how in 1953 RFE put a mobile 50 kW mw transmitter,
code named Eagle, on the air. It was located in
Germany near the Czechoslovak border and operated
on 854 kHz. This frequency was earlier used by AFN
Berlin, but they moved to another frequency enabling
RFE to operate. Romanian Radio Bucharest also used this
frequency and heavily protested RFE using same channel.
Also Czech jamming on 854 was severe. So the transmitter
was closed down in 1956 and put into storage in Bremen for
several years. Later (59-60 I think), the transmitter still
inside its van was shipped by CIA to Swan Island in the
Caribbean. There it became "commercial" Radio Swan, later
Radio Americas. After eight years, in 1968, Radio Americas
left the airwaves for good and this time the transmitter
was moved to Vietnam. Broadcasting from an aeroplane, this
clandestine was called Blue Eagle.

Radio Americas was well heard also here in Finland those
days, mw 1160v kHz and sw 6000 kHz (7.5 kW). The statistics
show a total of about 100 QSLs in Finnish collections.

Well, maybe to the younger listeners the names Swan Island
or R Americas doesn't mean much, but those of us who scanned
the bands in the 60's surely remember this station.

Lehdessä Radiomaailma 11-12/2007, s 3-5 olevan Jari Lehtisen
kirjoituksen "Alas Castro! - ....." johdosta hiukan kommentteja:
Laajasalon tarkkailuasemalla pyöri taajuudella 1157 kHz
R&S HFH-1 kentänvoimakkuusmittaus ajalla 5.66-12.68
yhteensä kaikkiaan 156 yönä, aikavälin: 0000-0330 UTC.
Vain 7 yönä mainitusta 156:sta kerrasta näkyy signaalia.
Indikoiduksi tullut Fs 16.3.67, 0230-0300UTC oli 14.9 dB(uV/m),
eli 5.56 uV/m. EBU on aina käyttänyt Fs-yksikköä dB(uV/m).
Tilastollisesti ilmoitettiin mitatuista pistearvoista nk 50%-arvo.
HFH-1 IF-kaista 200 Hz oli käytössä, jolloin pohja- (kohinataso)
on luokkaa -5 dB(uV/m) eli parasta mihin MF-taajuuksilla pääsi.
Valitsin mitattavat taajuudet EBU-kampanjaa varten ja taajudella
1157 kHz Swan Island oli kai niitä ainoita vaihtoehtoja - silloinkin !
- kun samalla taajuudella (päästökaistalle) ei saa olla muita...
Perästäpäin vaikuttaa siltä, että lähetin ei ollut "oikella" taajuudella
kaikkina mitattavina öinä, joten HFH ei kantoaaltoa voinut havaita.
Jo 80 Hz sivussa Rx:n taajuudelta vei kantoaallon näkymättömiin.
Mittauksista löytyy selostus lehdestä: Radiomaailma 10/2002, s 15-17.
"LF- ja MF-taajuisten EBU-kentänvoimakkuusmittausten historiaa"
Esimerkiksi Poro 1140 kHz oli, 3.66-11.78, mittauksessa yhteensä
1237 iltapäivänä. Bangkok 1580 kHz oli mittauksessa, 1.72-11.78
yhteensä 365 iltapäivänä. Muita pitkämatkaisia mitattavia ei löytynyt.
Poro ja Bangkok käyttivät suunta-antennia, joka otettiin huomioon.
Niiden signaalit tänne Suomeen saattavat tulla useammin "suoraa
reittiä" (Great-circle), kun signaalit esim. USA:sta eivät juuri tule.
