One of the big problems with the digital modes is exactly what you allude to: "Some day the ARRL might.......". The problem from a software development perspective is not knowing what they might do because depending on what they do the design of the software will be dictated. We are not likely to embark on some kind of major development on a hunch. We can assume a few things ( and we already have) but when it comes to tracking digital modes, we have to work on more facts rather than hunches; otherwise, we could spend months redesigning things only to find out that our hunch was completely wrong.
I find it difficult to believe they would have a proliferation of a hundred new awards for each different permutation of digital mode that comes about. Kind of like a CW award for hand key, another CW award for keyer, yet another for CW keyboard, another for CW keyboard under 5wpm, another for 10wpm, ...... and so on. I think they will define a new digital mode award and included in that award will be all these different digital modes that have come about ( excluding rtty ). If that were the case, then it seems that the mode in DXbase should only be Digital, and if someone wanted to keep a record of which variety of digital mode, they could use comments, or special fields. On the other hand, if in deed there a hundred new awards, then the mode in dxb should be each different digital mode.
