The kit you speak of is next to useless. I tried it twice and it didn't help.

This is a problem with LaserJet 5L, 6L and 1100 series, and it involves the 
a couple of internal components in the sheet feed mechanism. It required a 
repair by an HP depot that cost about $90, after which the printer 
functioned perfectly. The tech that serviced it stated that he's done 
hundreds of these mods in the last 3 years or so and gets a few in every 
week still. Other than that, these are amazing printers that just go and 
go...probably the last thing of quality that HP will ever build at this rate...

There was also a class-action lawsuit that if you had a defective printer 
for which you paid for a repair, you could receive a settlement of 
something like $70 or so from HP.
