A-ha!  On my PC, the left side contains a WHITE column with 5 icons.  If 
the text is also white, that's why I can't see it.

My display properties:
Windows and buttons: Windows XP style
Color scheme: SILVER  (I wonder if this is what makes the column 
background white instead of blue?  I just tested it, and YES, it does. 
It's blue now and I can read the text.  But, I'm switching back to the 
much-more-attractive-IMO silver scheme; I don't need the text labels 
that badly!)
