I think I figured out the cause of my Dxbase instability problem and will report it in case anyone else experiences it.
When my hard drive failed, the second HD I had in the PC failed too. I haven't figured out why but I replaced only the primary HD. I set up the new installation of Dxbase that same way I had it before, which had auto screen lookups from my QRZ CD data enabled on the directories tab of the personal options screen. The QRZ data had been on the second physical drive but is now on the only HD. DXbase seems to have kept pace with incoming spots when the QRZ data was on the separate HD but couldn't keep up when the QRZ data was on the new C: drive, resulting in Dxbase's crashing. I turned off the auto lookups, which was I wasn't using anyway, and haven't had a problem since then. I was very lucky to have a current backup of Dxbase when the HD failed. I had been using a couple of different backup approaches, including backing up to a different partition on the same HD, which I decided was the worst. I also backed up to another PC on the LAN and to a Maxtor mini-USB external HD. The Maxtor now has stopped working too. I recently bought an HP MediaSmart Server, model EX475, to solve the backup problem. It backs up all attached PCs automatically every day and has recovery programs on CDs. Since it's a server that runs on Microsoft Home Server OS, it the capability to have a shared photo (or other file) server accessible via password on the internet. If one is running XP Professional on attached PCs, the PCs can be operated remotely via the Internet, though I can't get that to work from behind my employer's firewall at work. Jim N7US -----Original Message----- I recently had to reinstall DXbase (and everything else) after a hard drive crash. Since then, I've had several instances of DXbase stopping, so I've had to kill and restart it. I don't have any other symptoms, and I haven't noticed any problems with other programs. Should I reinstall it over what I have now? I can first save screenshots of menus, etc. and the configuration file. Thanks very much.
