Mike, With one possible exception, a database is a database. Doesn't matter if it is DXbase, Word, Excel, or whatever... and over time, there is a high probability that we will all experience database corruption at one time or another... That's just the way computers are... Hard drives become defective, memory could become corrupted, motherboards become damaged... the list is never ending... So, it is important for any user of a computer to take steps to safe guard their computer data by insuring that they have accurate and working backups. If you don't do this, you will most certainly one day experience the unpleasant event of seeing your data gone.
With DXbase, there is one additional issue that can come into play.... when you exit DXbase, the last operation that it performs is to write your statistics data from computer memory to a file on your hard drive. If you do not exit DXbase properly, or if you shut the computer down before this final process completes, then there is a good chance your statistics data will not be properly stored. Thus, next time you start DXbase, you will see the message that you need to initialize tables... but, if the statistics data is partially present, as might be the case if you shut down the system before the entire file was written to the hard drive, then you could see a problem being reported as corrupted file... No doubt, the process for "fixing" the file that Joe gave you was correct and most likely its the only way for you to get your database restored. I don't know about the message you quoted about every contact will be ignored. Doesn't sound familiar to me. Personally, in the 20 years or so that I have been running DXbase, I have never, not even once, ever had a problem with my database when starting DXbase. But, I am careful to maintain my computer, periodically check my hard drive's performance and replace it when bad sectors etc are reported, and I make sure to allow DXbase to finish writing the stats to the hard drive when I exit the program. I also use a UPS power backup so that if the power fails, my computer doesn't crash and thereby corrupt any open databases.
