I use a HP7580 (I am sure that there is a newer model out by now). I print about 30 QSLs per session. I usually have my cards pre-printed on one side and use the printer to print the other side, and it works fine. I have been using this set up for a long time. I recently changed my QSL cards and the preprinted side is slick now and I am having a little problem with the cards not going through perfectly straight. This didn't happen when I used my old cards that weren't glossy on one side.
I am pretty sure that most printers will work OK. You might want to be sure that the "input" slot for the blanks is large enough so that you won't have to be putting in cards too often. The older model is the Brother HL-5050 and the newer one is the Brother MFC-7840W. They each have a multi-purpose tray (or slot) on the front of the printer to feed card stock, letterhead & envelopes. Also, I open the access door on the back to keep the paper path relatively straight, otherwise when the cards curl around to exit the top of the printer, they sometimes jam. The HL-5050 model says this multi-purpose tray can hold 50 sheets. But, when using thicker QSL's than normal paper thickness, the number of pages is smaller. I usually print 10 or less QSL's at a time (normally 5 to 8) so that if something goes wrong with one, then it doesn't waste too many cards. A similar current model would be the Brother HL-5340D which is available for about $115: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113427 Obviously this laser printer only prints in black but the print is sharp, crisp and clear and does not easily smear. Plus, the toner cost is much lower than ink costs for an inkjet printer. Clark, W8TN On 2/5/2012 11:12 AM, Mike Kasrich wrote: > I might be looking at getting a new printer of some sort.
