Ben, I had an experience this past weekend and it made me think of you. I have a new Win7/64bit machine running intel motherboard but the video card uses an AMD processor. So, I installed a new blu-ray internal drive and upon boot up, I was greeted by a message telling that there were new updates available for my AMD video card. So, I said ok and about 60 megs of data were downloaded but when it was installed, my machine crashed during the process. I rebooted and my video was completely hosed up and could barely read the screen. Luckily, I could see enough to direct my machine to go to a previous restore point. That got me back to a working machine. Curiously, when I manually have Windows check for updated video drivers, it tells me I am running the current driver... go figure.... Being supersticious, I now have this warning siren in my head that says be careful when dealing with anything AMD. I know this doesn't help you, but just thought I'd share my recent saga too. I think if I were in your shoes, I'd begin looking for a different machine that doesn't give you all the grief, just like I'm now doing a little research for a different video card that doesn't include AMD.

I still have the problem after extensive cleanup of my hard drive re unneeded DXBase components, changing the Processor, changing the memory, even changing the Graphics card, 'cause AMD says the memory on the graphics card comes into play with the process. At this point, I have a not replaced the motherboard. BUT, MSI assures me that the motherboard could not possibly be the cause of this problem. So, what is causing this problem? I have just completed extensive testing as to when this hang up problem occurs. When a Spot is clicked on that shows a long path of either 42.5, 60.8 or 198.8/197.8 the process of updating the Summary window goes on 'hold' for up to eleven more spots being clicked on. This is when I click on them manually. It does not matter if I am progressing up the List or down the List. When I have traveled 11 spots from the one that created the hang up, it usually, but not always, unfreezes and works correctly until the next number, listed above, shows up. I have changed my location (Lat = +42.34/Log = +71.37) in User Options but that did not solve the problem. At this point I think I would like to go back to ver. 1.06 or something. I am thinking of completely uninstalling and ridding my REG file of all indicators of DXBase and starting over again. Oh yeah, I have not changed my Hard Drive. Guess that is the next thing. I am so frustrated at this point. I am very interested in any comments anyone out there may offer.
