Spam on mailing lists, including Yahoo Groups, can be controlled quite well with a little effort.
The first step is to be very skeptical when approving signups. Unless the list owner or his associates are fully confident of the applicant, they should only approve the applicant as moderated. The very first posting by said new member will usually reveal if the person is 'real' or is a 'spammer'. That posting is distributed only to moderators for review and does not go to the entire list. If the posting indicates the person is a real dxbase user, then moderation is removed from that person and a substantial source of spam has been avoided. There is still the possibility that a good member of the group could have his e-mail hijacked. I don't have an explanation about how this happens, but it does. A number of the large email providers have been compromised. When your email has been compromised the spammer can distribute spam to your entire address book..not just user groups. In this later case the list owner/moderator must act quickly and either delete the member or set him as moderated. If your email service has been compromised the first step is to immediately change your password. Usually this takes care of the problem..but of course by now you have been thoroughly embarrassed. Every significant group requires at least two owners and usually a few additional moderators. I run a number of Yahoo Groups very successfully. I derail spammers quickly. They keep trying, but with a little effort the problem is controlled. I unsubscribed some time ago and never intend to use it again. But I still get the e-mails no problem. Incidentally, I subscribe to a number of reflectors (Towertalk, CTDXCC, CQ-Contest, Writelog) and never have a problem. When/if they blacklist Yahoo, I think we should see some action. It is happening on/to AOL also. 73 Joe On Tue, 10 Dec 2013 18:54:56 -0600 Crownhaven <crownha...@bellsouth.net> writes: > First time I have ever seen spam on a Yahoo reflector and I'm > subscribed to several.
