Dick, That's more or less the approach I took.
The shack computer is a Lenovo laptop (bought specifically because at the time it was the only thing still offered with XP). I do QSLing, awards tracking, etc. on a Dell desktop that was running Vista.
I put a second hard drive in the desktop and installed Win 7 on it. This belt-and-suspenders approach left everything intact in the old drive. Being a glutton for punishment, I shortly thereafter took the advice of my IT manager son and put in a SSD and did the whole exercise again :-) I then used the original drive in the second slot for data (since replaced with a larger capacity drive)
After this success I did the same thing with the shack laptop, albeit with a smaller capacity SSD. For data storage I got a carrier that holds a hard drive and plugged it into the optical drive slot.

One problem with that is the tendency of Windows 7 to want files in a different place than XP (DXBase for example). All I could use PCM for would be moving data files. I would still have to do a fresh install of all the App's. My thinking is to build up another system (like the one I am using now) and do a parallel install so I can be sure they all work. A royal PITA, but with XP support ending soon, I foresee an avalanche of virus attacks that will not be countered. Thanks for the assistance, 73, Dick, W1KSZ
