Diabetes spreading rapidly among teenagers in Kuwait' KUWAIT: "The extent of prevalence of Diabetes in Kuwait is alarming and is among the highest in the world. And what is more disturbing is the fact that this potentially life threatening condition is spreading rapidly among the teenagers as well, also known as "juvenile diabetes" in medical terminology" said Dr Habib Steitieh, Specialist Diabetologist Endocrinologist, New Mowasat Hospital, Salmiya. He was talking to Arab Times at a free diabetes check up camp organized to coincide with World Diabetes Day, observed every year this day. The Hospital, along with some leading pharmaceutical companies have taken the initiative to render free blood tests, medical check ups and to educate and raise general awareness regarding diabetes among the local populace. Around 15-30 per cent of the people in Kuwait are reportedly diabetics stricken against a world average of 7-10 per cent, said Dr Habib. Unhealthy food habits coupled with sedentary lifestyle are possibly some of the reasons for this spurt in number of diabetes patients in Kuwait, he added. The fast food culture coupled with indiscriminate consumption of sweetened carbonated drinks (popularly known as soft drinks) by the young and the old alike also contribute to the onset of this condition. "In Kuwait, majority of the diabetes patients fall in the 22-40 age bracket", stated Habib. Diabetes is a condition in which the body loses its capacity to turn glucose derived from food into usable energy. The amount and method of absorption of the glucose is regulated by a hormone called insulin. People with diabetes produce too little insulin resulting in abnormally high levels of blood sugar, said an informed medical source. "Diabetes, if not checked and monitored periodically, can lead to failure of other organs too, notably liver, kidney and even heart", said Dr Mahmood Omar, Consultant, Dept of Infectious and Digestive Diseases. He cited obesity and rich fatty food as likely causes of high incidence of the disease in Kuwait . Obesity level in this country stands at a whopping 40 per cent, which again points to wrong eating habits and lack of proper exercise, he said. The hospital has been organizing free diabetes check up camps since the past four consecutive years on this day. "Its befitting to the stature and reputation of our hospital to render free community medical service" stressed Dr Mahmood. http://www.arabtimesonline.com/ARABTIMES/kuwait/view.asp?msgID=5859 <http://www.arabtimesonline.com/ARABTIMES/kuwait/view.asp?msgID=5859> U can also check something that was more than ten yrs ago written >> Kuwait's Kids "Risk factors, such as stressful life events, which may increase the peripheral need for insulin, may not only act as promoters of §-cell destruction, but may also disclose the §-cell impairment and make the disease clinically overt. http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/1995/11/01/466.html <http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/1995/11/01/466.html> mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
