Relative to making any "dramatic" changes to DynAPI2+ (the current
distribution chain) we should avoid it at all costs for the following
reasons:
1) The API has heritage and dramatic changes will force people to "recode"
widgets to upgrade.
2) The API in it's current form (supporting level 4 browsers) is an aging
beast and it's expected that within the next 12-18 months will be deemed
useless to all but the most "all encompassing" of developers.
3) Dramatic change should be reserved for the new DOMapi (browsers 5+),
which should be significantly leaner and rebuilt new, from the ground up.
4) Finally, and of the most importance is the need to solve the few
remaining issues that hold this API back from truly "broad" use and
applicability. Namely, remaining NS6 bugs and more importantly resolution
of the remaining Macintosh bugs for IE5 (if possible).
Most Macintosh users browse with IE5 and Macintosh is "more" relevant then
IE6 from a statistical standpoint (more people use IE5 on Macintosh then
people use NS6 across "all" platforms).
Just my thoughts,
Ray
