Yeah, I have tried it and as it turns out,
Gabriel's example is also broken.
With the three panels showing...
Click on the two top links from two panels, one after the other
(fast enough so that the first click doesn't have time
to load the document, which incidently isn't fast at all)
Then you will find that it stops both of them dead.
And subsequently all loading from any panel.

Have you checked out loadlayer yet?
Gabriel spent some time on exactly the same problems recently, and it's
pretty cool, it re-directs links inside the loaded documents to point to the
loadlayer, the main doc, or a popup.
