Ahh, answering my own question, sort of.

I was using Mozilla 1.4 for testing.  I tried in IE6, and I was prompted
about a JavaScript error.  Using the builtin JavaScript debugger, I saw the
output of the php file.  It was somewhat malformed.  Now I have the hook I
was looking for; I have the error feedback now so I can correct the PHP
code.  But if anyone else has other ideas how to approach this part of the
development, let me know.
