I've just tested both selected and checked in Mozilla Firefox 0.9.1, IE6, and Opera 7.53 all in WinXP and Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and Konqueror 3.2.2 in Linux/XFree86. Either way seems to work with these browsers. Are there specific browsers/versions with which this doesn't work, that we should look out for? I remember the classic 4.0 browsers probably used only checked. I did a brief search and see ".checked" is predominantly referenced over ".selected", and ".checked" is listed in the classic Netscape's old (pre-DOM?) ClientReferenceJS13. Incidentally the getState method had ".checked", so I'll go ahead and use that for setState.
