I've built a tree widget that does just that.  You can dynamically add and delete nodes.  For full blown node creation its actually
a little bit quicker and lighter (read fewer dynlayers).  However it does not implement Richards nodeContent mechanism (which
runs blazingly fast...alot faster than creating a new node.) I will try to get it posted in the next 4 hours.

Any ideas on how I go about modifying your RiFastTreeNode to allow adding of nodeContent _AFTER_ the tree had been added to the document?
It seems that I can only do so before adding the tree to the document.
