Hello all!
My name is Jim, and I am a web site developer who
has used DynAPI since its original inception by Dan as DynDuo.
This is a request for fellow developers in help to
determine bug issues for a 100% DynAPI site, especially Windows 98.
The site in question is at http://www.ethicsplan.com/stage/
Backdrop:
--------------------------------------------
I have always used components of DynAPI as needed
for support of particular dynamic behavior of a site, but never a full-fledged
site based entirely on it...at least until now.
I have a client who's site I originally did some
two years ago. He recently requested a full revamp, and, since his site has a
business focus of healthcare corporations involved with Medicare, his site is
highly text intensive, meaning that he has a lot of articles relating to
compliance with Medicare protocols. So as a developer, the underlying
architectural motif is navigation of a lot of text, and how to make this an
enjoyable experience for the user.
I took this as an opportunity to use DynAPI as the
base infrastructure in which to facilitate navigation on a text-intensive site.
I would do this by slicing and dicing the text-intensive articles into small
pieces that could be pulled in easily by setURL, and by dividing the screen
real-estate into layers that could be manipulated to show this content at the
user's discretion and choice.
To the unknowing, you would think that you are
looking at a frames-based site, but in reality there are no frames. However, the
architectural outline of the site is a frames-like layout structure as
follows:
-------------------------------------------------
Top
Layer
-------------------------------------------------
Menu |
Content | Page Menu
Layer |
Layer |
Layer
-------------------------------------------------
where
- Top Layer is made up of DynAPI layers positioning
the site title, logo, etc. and remains constant.
- Menu Layer is a button menu stucture in a
layer based on a button widget I developed, and remains
constant.
- Content layer is where the dynamic body of text
appears, as pulled in via setURL.
- Page Menu layer is a button
stucture layer that dynamically changes according to the button
pressed in the Menu layer.
Each of the layers are DynAPI layers with the
specific purpose as outlined above .
The idea here is that the user may make a menu
selection from the Menu Layer which does the setURL action to bring in the
selection's first page content into Content Layer, and the selection's submenu
into the Page Menu Layer. This submenu in the Page Menu Layer enables the
user to select sibling content topics which also does the setURL action for
displaying content in the Content Layer.
This is a single screen navigational scheme to
display on one screen a three-level nested text outline such as
Topic
1
(Menu Layer)
Subtopic
1.1 (Page Menu Layer)
Content
1 (Content Layer)

What is needed:
--------------------------------------------
With this background, here is where I can use some
help. It should be noted here that I have no interest in pre-version 5 browser
support, be it Netscape or IE.
This was developed on an NT 4.0 machine using
IE5.5, and works as designed. It also works perfectly whether I access it
via my ISP or by AOL.
The problem is that my client is saying that
"There is no text at all on the first page and when
I log on, the computer freezes up then I have to reboot."
This client's system profile includes Windows 98
and IE5.5 accessing the Internet via AOL.
I do not have Windows 98 on any of my systems here,
which is why I need some help. Is there someone out there who has access to
Windows 98 and who could spend a few minutes to help me analyze what is
going on? My client is not a technically-oriented person, so trying to get a
technical assessment is impossible. I need someone who has the technical
where-with-all who knows DynAPI, and who is comfortable talking
architecture as I have above.
Any assist would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks!
