xml-rpc seems like the obvious choice here. I have just been thinking about
doing something with this where js classes on the client correspond with php
classes on the server. Can't see it speeding up development but seems like a
neat experiment. Isn't persist basically just serialisation (or have I
misunderstood) - I think they are not opposite at all.
